Information for participants
Hotel informationWe recommend one of the following hotels:
From the airportIf you want to go to the university directly you should take a train going to "Amsterdam Zuid WTC", whereas when want to go to the centre it is easier to go to "Amsterdam Centraal". So read the notice boards carefully. Buy your ticket in the central hall at the airport, either at a counter or from a machine (slightly cheaper, some accept credit cards and maestro/cirrus bankcards, others accept coins (no bills though)). Get a single to either Amsterdam Centraal (about 4 euro, 15 minutes) or Amsterdam Zuid WTC (about 3 euro, 5 minutes) depending on whether you want to go to the centre of the city or the university. Both trains run at least six times per hour. How to get to the Vrije UniversiteitNotice that there are two universities in Amsterdam; the working group is at the Vrij Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). There is a page with general information on how to reach the VU (by car or public transport) here. Use tram 5 or metro 51 to travel between the city centre and the VU (see public transport info below). From Amsterdam Zuid WTC station you can use the tram or metro as well, but since it is only one stop it is easier to walk 10 minutes. On the map below the route to the science building (spectacularly called "Building 1081") is indicated. There is a coordinate system inside the bulding: room C1.21 is located on the first floor in the C section (alphabetic ordering starts with A at the West side of the building); the C section is along the main corridor (to the right if you use the entrance as indicated in the map).Public TransportTram line 5 and metro 51 go from Amsterdam Centraal station past Amsterdam Zuid WTC station to the Vrije Universiteit (tramstop also called "De Boelelaan/VU") and further towards Amstelveen. Tickets for the tram can be bought inside the tram (from a machine or driver/conductor), but this is twice as expensive as using a "strippenkaart" (with 15 "strips"). These "strippenkaarten" you can buy at the Kiosk (orange coloured shop in the railway stations). You stamp the strippenkaart in the yellow machines in the trams (or in some trams you have it stamped by the conductor). When going from the centre of Amsterdam (e.g. the hotel) to the university you stamp the third empty strip. When travelling within the city centre you stamp the second empty strip.Local map
